Top 10: Johnny Depp films

1. Edward Scissorhands

Personally one of my favorite films. Johnny Depp stars as a man with scissors for hands. He lives alone in a gothic mansion and never comes out, that is until a saleswoman, Peg, finds him and forces him to leave his home with her. She takes him in her home and Edward befriends Peg’s son Kevin and her daughter Kim.

Edward rises to fame when they discovered that he has exceptional skills at trimming bushes and hair. However, people begin to turn against him when bad rumors spread about him due to people trying to take advantage of him. In the end, this inevitably drives him away once again back to his mansion.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

It’s Johnny Depp as a pirate. Of course this would make it to the list. In the first of three movies, Johnny Depp plays the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain of the famous Black Pearl, well at least until his crew went against him, which is why he’s trying to get back his ship. However, this proves to be quite a difficult task as his crew had turned immortal. They had taken Aztec gold and was cursed with immortality until they could return every piece of gold they had taken back. But of course, that’s not stopping Captain Jack Sparrow.

3. Chocolat

One of Johnny Depp’s few romantic movies. Chocolat tells the story of of a young French drifter, Vianne Rocher, who opens a chocolate store in France and changes the lives of the people living in that town. Johnny Depp here plays the role of Roux, an Irish wanderer who later shares a mutual attraction with Vianne Rocher.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

The continuation of THe Curse of the Black Pearl does not disappoint. Johnny Depp once again performs marvelously and we are kept at the edge of our seats the whole time. This part of the series features Captain Jack Sparrow and his debt to Davy Jones, a sea creature like thingy.

5. Public Enemies

Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in the same film = win. This film was set during the Great Depression and features the life of FBI agent Melcin Purvis in his attempt to stop criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Neloson, and Pretty Boy Floyd.

6. Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber from Fleet Street

This film features a different Johnny Depp, one that sings. Not a film for those who hate blood and gore, but a good film nevertheless. Johnny Depp place Sweeney Todd, previously Benjamin Barker, a talented barber who was exiled from his country by the judge in his attempt to steal away Todd’s wife. Years later, Depp escapes and returns to his country once more seeking his wife, but things are not as they were when he left. He is told that his wife had died and that his daughter has become under the wing of the judge whom he hated. This is when he then vows to have revenge on the judge and the killing ensues.

7. Once Upon a Time in Mexico

In Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Johnny Depp stars as CIA Agent Sands who orders thefilms main character, El Mariachi, to kill General Marquez, the man who murdered El Mariachi’s wife and child.

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

The last of Pirates of the Caribbean series. This film was not as good as the previous two for me  because it felt a bit draggy in the middle. However, it still makes it in the top ten list because it is still made of awesome. This time the crew of the Black Pearl sets out to rescue their captain Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones’s Locker. They also go against the East India Trading Company who have made plans of extiguishing piracy.

9. Ed Wood

One of Johnny Depp’s many collaberations with director Tim Burton. Depp plays cult filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr and his life when he made films which were widely acclaimed along with his relationship with actor Bela Lugosi. Despite not doing so well in the box office, this film still recieved positive reviews from film critics.

10. Finding Neverland

In Finding Neverland, Johnny Depp stars as the popular Scottish writer J. M. Barrie and his platonic relationship with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her sons who eventually inspire him into writing the play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. It’s pretty refreshing as Depp here plays a pretty normal role compared to his other films. But nevertheless, Finding Neverland remains to be a wonderful touching story.
